Individual Note 1 (shared)

William James (Builder living at 92 Twynyrodyn), built Bryn Villa for William Davies in 1893/4 and another 4 houses adjoining in 1904-5. Lewis' brother John was also lodging with William James on the 1901 Census15

Individual Note 2 (shared)

From Nigel Gunter: My Gx3 Grandparents were Lewis James & Hannah James nee Griffiths. They moved as a family from Pembroke to Merthyr c1858. Lewis however moved to Merthyr before that with other James family (word of mouth handed down from my Gx2 Grandmother). In 1851 Lewis is living at Dowlais Top, Merthyr - lodging with John & Dinah Baxter nee James (Dinah born 1817 LFNYG, Pem).

Lewis & Hannah James' eldest daughter Eliza James (b Bwlchmawr, Dinas 1848) is my Gx2 Grandmother. She married William Davies Merthyr Tydfil Registrars Office 16th March 1868.

William & Eliza were extremely hard working and William negotiated a contract with one of the local mines for a contract and thus sub-contracted miners to work under him. He & Eliza also ran and managed the Angel Hotel in Merthyr and Eliza also had a milk round. Oh she had 14 children as well - 7 surviving.

In 1895, William decided to build a house for his expanding family - Bryn Villa. Building permission was applied for 31 May 1895. A few years after we suspect that William Davies decided to build 4 more houses next door to Bryn Villa. The builder who applied for planning permission (June 29th 1904) and who built the houses (completed Jan 6th 1905) was (ta da!) William James - your William James.

In 1901, William James & his wife are recorded living at 92 Twynyrodyn - at 92a Twynyrodyn are John & Gwen Evans. The upstairs and downstairs of a house were often split at this time and thereafter known as 92 and 92a so technically they were sharing the same house.

John & Gwen Evans are also relations. One of William & Eliza's daughters Charlotte (my G Grandmother) married a Lewis Evans. John was Lewis Evan's brother.

It goes on....there exists to this day a firm of undertakers called Alfie James & Sons - company est 1854 - run as a family concern out of 53 (I think) Twynyrodyn. This again was the firm of undertakers that the family historically used for all family burials. I believe Alfie is the son of Alfred James born to William & his wife in 1867.15
